Physical Properties

Buoyancy

Polystyrene has the ability to float in water due to its light weight. This makes it ideal for making floating boards that are often seen in swimming pools! (Buzzle, 2016).

Strength and Durability

Even though it is lightweight, polystyrene can be extremely strong in some cases. Hence, it is applied in several uses such as insulation and construction (Empower Construction, 2013). However, crystal forms of the polymer polystyrene are not very strong. Its tensile strength is merely 30-60 MPa, which means it is not durable and can break easily (Buzzle, 2016).

Length of Use

Many of us are acquainted with disposable dishes and utensils and know that they are not meant to be used more than once. Polystyrene products are often made to be single use items, so they are not created for lengthy periods of time. Since it is inexpensive, it is understandable that it is not of the best quality in terms of its lifetime (Green Living Tips, 2009).

Foam cups are not strong or durable and can be damaged without a lot of effort
