Chemical Properties

Burning

Polystyrene is highly flammable. When it is burned, it has a orange yellow flame and gives off carbon particles (soot). Upon complete oxidation, it produces carbon dioxide and water vapour. (Buzzle, 2016). The burning of it also releases styrene gas. Studies have shown that this gas may have a negative effect on the nervous system.

Biodegradibility

Polystyrene takes an extremely long time to decompose or break down into the environment. Due to this, animals often ingest it when it is is not thrown into the garbage or properly recycled by companies that accept it (ofentimes, it is not accepted for curbside recycling collection)(Green Living Tips, 2009).
